I thought I’d kill two birds with one stone and turn an experiment in 3D animation into a useful video English lesson. As I was creating a rather fat individual, it seemed only natural to make a video about how to talk about fatness without sounding rude in British English.
I’ve chosen a selection of useful expressions that we use to refer to someone as fat, like Tony in the video, without causing offence. The expressions include chubby, overweight, rotund and more.
While far too many people in the world have too little to eat, we in the developed world have far too much. With easy access to sugar-filled, calorie-rich processed foods, and with a life-style that is increasingly sedentary, it is little wonder that people are growing increasingly fat.
I know myself how easy it is to put on weight and how difficult it can be to lose it again. I try to keep my weight in check by avoiding all processed foods and anything that contains added sugar. I rarely drink alcohol, limit the amount of meat I consume, and make sure my diet consists mainly of vegetables, fruit, pulses, legumes, oily fish, and shellfish.
I normally only drink water and avoid all soft drinks. Why would I want to pay a high price for what is essentially coloured sugar-water? Tap water is not only cheap, but it is also calorie-free.
I think that the food industry is going to face a future litigation scandal similar to the one that engulfed the tobacco industry once people realise that the obesity epidemic is caused by an industry that tries to extract maximum profit at the expense of people’s health.
Today, I had muesli and yogurt for breakfast with a glass of full-cream milk. For lunch I am having spinach and chickpeas. For my evening meal I will have a light snack of fresh tomatoes, fresh garlic, olive oil, mussels and mackerel followed by a pomegranate. If I am hungry during the day, I will eat some fruit such as a fresh peach, an apple, or a banana.
During the day I will also cycle for 15-30 km. This I will do while teaching English online through Skype. Gentle cycling on an exercise bike in front of my desk while giving classes online allows me to maintain a good level of fitness while at the same time doing the job that I love.
I am sure that this life-style helps to prevent me from ending up like Tony in the video. I also know that when I take my eye off the ball, so to speak, I do find myself quickly heading in a direction where you might well want to use some of the expressions in this video to describe me.
