A Child’s History of England
Chapter 2 – Ancient England Under the Early Saxons
Welcome to this, the second chapter of Charles Dickens’ A Child’s History of England, originally published in serial form between January 1851 and December 1853.
Over the course of this series, you will be able to listen to me reading all 163,285 words of this wonderful work.
This chapter looks at the period between the withdrawal of the Romans through to the Saxon invasion and establishment of the Saxon heptarchy. It ends with the death of Ethelred, Saxon king of Wessex.
The study pack contains two podcasts. One at full speed and the other at half-speed to help with your listening skills and your pronunciation.
The study pack also contains word games using vocabulary from this chapter. These include 3 crossword puzzles and 3 wordsearch puzzles, which can be used by yourself or in the classroom.
The word games are themed by places, people, and vocabulary in this chapter.
I have also included an interactive timeline for the chapter.
This can be opened on your computer, and will allow you to fully understand the sequence of events that Dickens covered in this chapter.
