My new Russian bride, Tatiana, is not speaking to me anymore.
I bought… I met her on a Russian dating website and she’s only just moved in with me.
We’re waiting for the visa, you see.
Anyway, Tatiana got beaten up by some animal rights activists in Worcester and she blames me.
“What shall I wear to Worcester?” she asked me.
It’s not Worcester, it’s Worcester, and it took me a minute to figure out what she meant.
For some reason, she seems to think that I said “Worcester, wear the fox hat.”
Why is this Funny?
Many British men, especially those with little chance of finding love closer to home, look for romance on Russian dating websites.
Worcester is not pronounced as, Worcester, as its spelling suggests.
Some people find the wearing of fur offensive.
Animal rights activists take particular offence.
A hat made of fox fur would be very provocative for animal rights activists, as Tatiana apparently discovered.
Our poor, jilted husband, on hearing the mispronounced Worcester, did not tell Tatiana to wear the fox hat. She misunderstood him.
The punchline of the joke is the fact that our Russian bride misheard a common English vulgar expression.
It’s the innuendo that makes the humour, not the crude language itself, which is why it is not required in the video.
The listener, who is in on the joke, will understand what was really said.
What he really said
What he actually said was Worcester. Where the fuck’s that?
This is a common way for someone to say, I have no idea where that is.
It is considered vulgar language and certainly ought not to be used in front of your grandmother.
Many places in the UK have names that do not sound like they are written.
The town of Worcester in the county of Worcestershire is a notorious example.
Worcester is pronounced as /ˈwʊstə/ and Worcestershire is pronounced /ˈwʊstəʃə/.
This joke was inspired by a joke I heard told by the late, great British comedian, Bob Monkhouse.
Bob was a comedian who, unlike the “comedians” today, did not rely on swearing but on intelligent humour to raise a laugh.
As he himself said, “Filth is an easy way to get a laugh.”
