Activate the consonant sounds / s / and / z /. In this Pronunciation Activation Pack we will be looking at the consonant sounds / s / and / z /. We will look at the letter combinations that give the / s / and / z / sounds. We will look at lots of words which have the / s / and / z / sounds in them. Finally, we will activate your ability to hear and produce the / s / and / z / sounds correctly. The / s / and / z /sounds are alveolar fricatives made by disrupting the air flow through a narrow channel formed by the tip of the tongue and the alveolar ridge, just behind the top teeth, to cause a hissing sound. The / s / sound on the chart is shown in blue, which means it is unvoiced, while the / z / sound is shown in green, which means that it is voiced. Idioms are expressions that are natural to native English speakers. They are very confusing for non-native English speakers. They're confusing because idioms don't mean what the words say. You cannot literally translate English idioms into another language. The vocabulary in this British English lesson is important for students to learn and master. There are a lot of idioms in this lesson as well as a set of questions which I have designed to help you learn, remember, and use the vocabulary and make it part of your active vocabulary. If you are serious about improving your British English vocabulary, these common British English idioms are essential. The idioms are: Wine and dine, Jam tomorrow, Upset the applecart, Make mincemeat of, Play gooseberry, Eat my hat, Eat for breakfast, Drink like a fish, Simmer down, and Till the bitter end.
There are quite a few wind idioms in British English. I have created an Activation Quiz to teach you 15 of them and give you some practice using them. These 15 idioms include put the wind up, take the wind out of someone’s sails, and an ill wind, to name just a few. You can learn these idioms by doing the multimedia-rich, interactive activator in this lesson.
An introduction to linking consonants in British English. Linking consonants occur when a consonant at the end of a word is followed by a vowel sound during the unbroken sound stream within a speech segment. This lesson explains how linking consonants work, gives examples of sentences containing linking consonants and examines why each linking consonant happens, and then moves on to activate your ability to hear the linking consonants in sentences. By understanding how linking consonants work, you will improve your listening skills, too.
There are a group of what we can call the worth words in English which cause confusion for many students and which are worth taking a closer look at. These words are worth, worthy, and worthwhile, as well as the expression worth it. In this lesson, I thought it would be worthwhile looking at how each of these words and expressions is used, and pronounced, correctly. I hope you will find my efforts in this lesson worthy of your time.
Sit back and listen to this very British look at how an Englishman deals with an unfortunate change of appearance. Simple Stories were written by Arthur Hammond Marshall (1866-1934) who wrote under the pen name of Archibald Marshall. His humorous stories were written for Punch, a satirical magazine published in Britain between 1841 and 1992. The Simple Stories make fun of stereotypical British characteristics such as our stiff upper lip, our sense of duty, our deference to royalty, and our pride in our country to name but a few. Because Simple Stories are short stories intended for an adult audience and are written in a simple style and vocabulary, they are ideal stories for learners of English. There are few words that will confuse even lower-level students.
