Irregular F Plurals

What I call irregular F plurals are nouns that end in the /f/ sound and are irregular plurals. Words like leaf, wife, and wolf. Not all nouns that end in /f/ are irregular plurals, however. Words like gulf, turf, and clef are regular plurals. Regular plurals in English simply add an S to the noun. Boy become boys, girl becomes girls, and lesson becomes lessons. Irregular plurals don’t do this. Some words that end in the /f/ sound, form the plural using ves. Of the irregular F plurals, leaf becomes leaves, knife becomes knives, and wolf becomes wolves. Notice that knife ends in FE but has the /f/ sound.

189-Word Spelling Activator

189-Word Spelling Activator

English spelling is difficult because the way we pronounce words does not always match the way they are written. Words can also contain letter combinations that sound differently in different words. I have designed this Spelling Activation Pack to help you to spell 189 of the most troublesome words in British English. I won't tell you what they are here, as that would be cheating, wouldn't it?

Inversion

Inversion

Inversion is the reversal of the usual order of the words in an English sentence. The normal order of an English sentence is subject – verb – object. We use inversion for various effects. There are two types of inversion in English. Subject and verb inversion to become verb – subject. Subject and auxiliary inversion to become auxiliary – subject – verb. This English Activation Pack will tell you all you need to know about how and when to use inversion. The pack contains an Activation Quiz with over 250 questions designed to get you using inversion properly. Each time you do the quiz you will be given 10 random questions. This way, you will be able to get hours of practice constructing sentences with inversion. Inversion

You're in Trouble

You're in Trouble

I haven't always been an English teacher. Indeed, I have done quite a few jobs, including two stints as a police officer. When I look back on my days as a police officer, I can recall many incidents that I'd like to share with you as anecdotes to help you develop your reading, listening comprehension, and vocabulary skills. Today's anecdote is about an incident I dealt with while working on my beat in the small village of Saint Martins, in Shropshire, England. I was, at the time, the village policeman, and spent my days driving around my beat in my trusty old Land Rover. It was a very sleepy village, and exciting incidents were few and far between. I should warn you that the incident I'm about to relate to you is not particularly exciting. Nevertheless, it's certainly one incident in my policing career that I shall never forget.
