Pick Up Phrasal Verb Activator

I picked up one of the video English lessons I made as part of my Daily Dose of English series from 2010 and thought it would make a good basis for a Britlish Library lesson. In this lesson we will look at the phrasal verb, pick up, as well as the phrasal verbs hold against, get on with, and take off. We will also look at some vocabulary items such as for a song, frail, record, vinyl, speaker, florist, look good on, tab, pick up the pieces, new line, bug, and runway. I hope that you will pick up a lot of new words in this lesson.

Present Perfect Time Markers - GA8

Present Perfect Time Markers - GA8

English uses time markers to accurately say when something happened or happens. Yesterday, last week, last month, last year, and many more expressions tell us the when of an action. We cannot use the above finished time markers with the present perfect because they show finished periods of time. We use these time markers with the past simple. We cannot use finished time markers like yesterday, and last year with the present perfect, but there are 4 time markers that we can use. Allow me to explain how we can use these time markers with the present perfect. This British English grammar is essential for all students of English and the many exercises in the pack will help you master it quickly and enjoyably.

This Vocabulary Activation Pack will help you to learn, remember, and use the following vocabulary items: a wealth of information, around, at your fingertips, bite off more than you can chew, blow your own trumpet, brush up on, chuffed to bits, coding, get a buzz out of, get your head around, get your teeth into, lean, make headway, mind you, no spring chicken, put off, reach the end of life, rebuild, rewrite, rusty, self-taught, sixty is the new forty, something of an understatement, spot on, streets ahead of, strive to, take the bull by the horns, teach an old dog new tricks, to say the least, and worn out. 35 Advanced Mistakes

35 Advanced Mistakes

To Err is Human! We all make mistakes yet mistakes can be useful in helping us learn. If you are afraid of making mistakes, you will never achieve fluency in English. Even native English speakers often make mistakes when speaking, so why should you worry?  By working your way through these mistakes, you can learn to avoid them yourself. Mistakes are an important part of the learning process and when you see these common mistakes that many students make, you will, hopefully, stop making them yourself. By working through these mistakes, you are training your mind to avoid making the mistakes again.

Commas - Punctuation for Students

Commas - Punctuation for Students

Oscar Wilde, a great British writer, once admitted to spending an entire morning removing a comma from a poem. Asked if that was all he had done, Wilde replied, “By no means: on mature reflection, I put back the comma.” If a great writer like Oscar Wilde had difficulty in deciding where and when to use a comma, what chance have the rest of us got? In this lesson I will teach you about the history of the comma and about how to use it. You will learn about clauses, ambiguity, the Oxford comma, question tags, coordinating conjunctions, coordinate adjectives, dates, and more. Do this lesson and you will be more confident in your ability to use the comma in your written English.

Colour Idioms

Colour Idioms

Idioms are expressions that are natural to native English speakers. They are very confusing for non-native English speakers. They're confusing because idioms don't mean what the words say. You cannot literally translate English idioms into another language. For example: A black mark has a literal meaning of a black mark on clothing or any other material. It also has a non-literal meaning of a record of something bad you have done. This lesson uses a video English lesson about colour idioms which I made in 2010, and which has been very popular on YouTube. The video has also been licenced for use by a Taiwanese publisher for inclusion in one of their textbooks. I decided to make this Vocabulary Activation Pack from the video English lesson because so many people like the video and because the vocabulary in it is important for students to learn and master. There are a lot of idioms in this lesson as well as a set of questions which I have designed to help you learn, remember, and use the vocabulary and make it part of your active vocabulary.
