Vocabulary Activation Pack - Smells

  • My dog’s got no nose!
  • No nose? How does the poor thing smell?
  • He smells horrible! In fact, he stinks!

Why is this funny? It’s funny because a dog without a nose would not be able to smell smells, but it could still be a very smelly dog. Smell is both a verb and a noun, while smelly is an adjective. In this Vocabulary Activation Pack, I will be looking at the various words we have to describe different types of smells, be they good, bad, or somewhere in between. Words we will examine include aroma, bouquet, fetor, fragrance, odour, perfume, pong, reek, scent, smell, stench, stink, and whiff. Vocabulary Activation Pack - Smells

35 Advanced Mistakes

35 Advanced Mistakes

To Err is Human! We all make mistakes yet mistakes can be useful in helping us learn. If you are afraid of making mistakes, you will never achieve fluency in English. Even native English speakers often make mistakes when speaking, so why should you worry?  By working your way through these mistakes, you can learn to avoid them yourself. Mistakes are an important part of the learning process and when you see these common mistakes that many students make, you will, hopefully, stop making them yourself. By working through these mistakes, you are training your mind to avoid making the mistakes again.

Alaska

Alaska

This “Alaska” joke gets its humour from the pronunciation features of British English. If you understand the rhythm of English and how weak and strong syllables behave when we speak, you will be able to understand the humour of this joke. The Britlish Library lesson explains how and why the joke is funny and gives you plenty of exercises to help you learn, remember, and use these pronunciation features.

My Biggest Fear

My Biggest Fear

We all seem to be worried these days. We're worried about the coronavirus. We are worried about the effects of the virus on the economy. We are worried about our futures. Worries are a natural human response to circumstances which arise because, unlike most other animals, we are capable not only of agonising over the past, but also of looking into the future and thinking about how things might be. This human "curse" has a rich vocabulary enabling us to talk about our fears, worries, and concerns with others for, after all, a worry shared is a worry two people have got, and troubles are easier to bear if you know you are not alone in facing them. This lesson aims to help you with some of the vocabulary concerning worries and fears.

Buttercup

Buttercup

English humour can be difficult for non-native English speakers. This is why simple English jokes are a very good way of teaching vocabulary, and why I’ve chosen a very simple joke for this lesson. I’m not going to write the joke here as it depends for its humour entirely on a homophone. A lot of jokes in English depend for their humour on the way completely different words can sound identical due to the speech features we find in spoken British English. This is one of those jokes. Listen to the joke and then do the exercises so that you can learn about why it is so funny.
